Book Club Launch

July 22, 2026 - 6:00PM to 7:30PM

Sign up now for our first Book Club meeting on July 22, 2026 at the club from 6:00pm to 7:30pm. Light refreshments will be available. Co-Chairs, Susan Chenault and Marion Frederickson will be your Hosts! July 22nd – The Last Train to Key West – a historical fiction novel about three women whose lives intersect in the Florida Keys during the devastating Labor Day Hurricane of 1935. The story follows Helen, a local woman trapped in an unhappy marriage; Mirta, a Cuban immigrant on her honeymoon; and Elizabeth, a woman trying to save her family from financial ruin. The novel intertwines their personal struggles with the historical event, exploring themes of love, survival, and resilience against the backdrop of the storm and the economic depression. August 19th – A Land Remembered – A best-selling novel written by author Patrick D. Smith, and published in 1984 by Pineapple Press. It is historical fiction set mostly in pioneer or “cracker” Florida. The story covers over a century of Florida history from 1858 to 1968. September 23rd – The Year of Necessary Lies – Set in 1903, the novel tells the story of Julia Briton, a naive and beautiful Boston socialite who faces a series of personal losses and discovers her husband’s involvement in the plume trade, which leads to the slaughter of birds for fashionable hats. This revelation propels Julia into a world of activism as she joins a group of female activists fighting against this cruel industry. Her journey takes her to the wilds of Florida, where she confronts danger and makes life-altering decisions Future Book Club Dates: September 23rd, October 28th, November 18th and December 16th.
